Being in a Body by Fliss Wheeler

Being in a Body

I’m delighted to be invited to be a guest host once again with One Mind Live. The first time that I hosted, my focus was Diving Into Body. This time, my focus is Being In A Body, which reflects my interest in our body as the expression of our spirit in the physical world.

Each earthly life time, we pour the accumulated wisdom of our spirit into a physical vessel here on earth. Why do we do this? I’ve asked this question many times. Sometimes, it can be uncomfortable trying to express the fullness of our spirit through the apparent limitations of our physical body. We feel the squeeze, the squish, the constriction, the stretch, the pull, the growing pains as we live and learn, love and laugh, lose and languish.

But there must be reason why we choose to be a spiritual being having a physical experience? Surely it’s more beautiful, more limitless, more expansive to be floating around in the ether than finding our way through the trials and tribulations of the physical world? I asked this question very directly in meditation recently and the response I received was beautifully simple.

We want to be physical because we want to find the edges, taste the tastes, and feel the sensations. Our spirit wants to know itself through the experience of Being In A Body. Chewing, sipping, kissing, running, rolling, loving, dancing, falling are all delicious experiences for a spiritual being that spends much of its time without a body. We can play here in the physical. We can feel who we are. We can bump up against things and discover which bits we like and which bits we don’t. Sensuality is spirituality.

So our body is our spirit’s greatest friend, ally and play mate. But how often do we think of our body in this way? I’ll be honest – not often. Sometimes I do, but mostly, I don’t. (And body is my thing!) But when I do remember that my body is the constant companion and confidant of my spirit, I immediately feel more alive. When I do allow myself to play with myself, (sounds funny but you know what I mean,) then I become lighter, more open, more outward facing, more seeking out of people and things to interact with. When I lose that playfulness because I have disappeared into my mental energy, then I begin to contract, close up, turn inwards upon myself, and retreat. I get smaller, and it doesn’t feel so good.

Being In A Body allows our spirit to play. So let’s play together!
